We are sad to report that former Amazon CFO Joy Covey died today in a tragic bicycle accident while riding on Skyline Boulevard in the mountains of San Mateo County. Local news stations have yet to name the victim, but people close to the Covey family have confirmed to PandoDaily the terrible news. Joy was 50 years old and is survived by her eight-year-old son named Tyler.
Most recently, Covey held the position of Treasurer at the Natural Resources Defense Council, but she is most widely recognized for her roles at Amazon, where she worked between 1996 and 2000 and shepherded the company through its IPO.
For those who know Covey personally, she will be remembered as a mother, a friend, and an adventurous athlete. PandoDaily’s Kym McNicholas had the following thoughts about her fallen friend:
Joy was very unassuming. Unless someone else told you then you would never know how successful she was. She would tell people that Amazon didn’t define her – that she was so much more. Her friends, including me, knew this was true. I didn’t know for over a year after meeting her about her success story. I just knew her as the incredibly athletic, heartwarming, caring, fun woman. She was an avid kiteboarder and frequented the Maitai kiteboarding events where we regularly hung out casually on the beach. She just recently lived out her dream kiting underneath Golden Gate Bridge. She was always quick to offer any help or advice to anyone launching a company, asking for nothing in return. She will be greatly missed!
The technology community lost one of its own today. Joy will be sorely missed. Our condolences go out to her family and friends.
