Southland, aka the only tech conference that’s equal parts whiskey and BBQ as it is business, just kicked off with an interview between former supermodel and founder of Every Mother Counts, Christy Turlington Burns. With the conference completely long since sold out, the only way to catch the interview – and catch the backstage action – is to sign up for our members-only livestream.
As our host Sarah Lacy so eloquently explained welcoming her to the stage, while Turlington Burns may be even more beautiful in person, she’s absolutely nothing like what one would would expect when imagining a stereotypical “model.”
Every Mother Counts is an advocacy group focused on global maternity health, a deeply personal cause for Turlington Burns following her own complicated pregnancy. The group has done work in Haiti, Indonesia, Malawi, and Uganda, as well as in the US.
So if you’re in Nashville and managed to score an early ticket, make your way to the venue, where the stage includes both interview chairs and a 9-piece drum kit. Paypal is sponsoring a gourmet coffee bar – despite the sudden departure of its CEO and our scheduled Southland guest, David Marcus. And of course, there’s Whiskey (and a full bar of other of adult libations).
The evening will wrap up with a massive kick-off party featuring performances by local bands, The Weeks, LEAGUES and Buffalo Clover. Tomorrow morning’s sessions will kick off with an interview with former Vice President and current Kleiner Perkins Caufield Byers partner Al Gore.
Southland 2014 is already awesome, and we’re just getting started.
As an opening special treat, here’s the opening session of Pando: Sarah Lacy’s interview with Christy Turlington Burns.
To watch the rest of the conference (including the backstage interview when Sarah comes off stage, you’ll need to be a Pando member. Sign up instantly here.
