Amazon’s head of China operations will be leaving the company at the end of November, following rumors on Chinese social media that he was going to Apple. Wang Huahua, who has been with Amazon for more than seven years, will move to “something he’s more interested in,” according to a company spokesman. The spokesman also offered up this classic defense: “Because Steve has been with Amazon for quite a while, the thing we want to say to the outside is…everything will be operating smoothly.” Amazon holds a 4.2 percent share of China’s business-to-consumer retail market, far behind Alibaba’s Tmall and 360Buy. However, some industry observers feel that deep-pocketed Amazon stands a good chance in China, because it can afford to wait out the ecommerce price wars that dog the space.
