Bored with its cat and mouse game with publishers (more like big lion and mouse), Amazon has set its sights on another industry with which to play checkbook bully. Jeff Bezos’ company is focusing on the high-end clothing business through with the attitude, “go big and spare no expense.” Amazon has sold clothing for some time, but the high-end brand focus is something new. The retailer has apparently hired three women to try on size 8 shoes all day while it shoots up to 3,000 fashion images daily. This significant investment extends to offering free shipping and free returns at the cost of millions of dollars per year to the company. Amazon has the cash to throw around and it certainly has access to the customers. Traditional brands and fashion retailers have every right to be worried. [Source NYT]
