Ben Horowitz, one of the partners at Andreessen-Horowitz, has written a post about what needs to be done in the lead-up to demoting a loyal friend as a company grows. Horowitz spells out the entire story, but in summary, if an employee that is loyal to the company is no longer the best fit for the job as the company gets to the next level, the CEO must make the call to demote or fire the employee. It’s a precarious path to walk down, but important to do so.
