Cult of Mac has a theory that the real reason why Foursquare and Facebook are happy that people are still discussing the creepiness that was Girls Around Me is that the two companies are desperate to hide just how much data they give away by default. Anyone using Foursquare’s API can get the same information that GAM gathered, and all settings are opt-out instead of opt-in. As we continue to live in a social-network world, privacy concerns are going to continue to focus on issues like these.
