A Montreal college student has been expelled for alerting his university to a serious vulnerability in its computer systems. The Computer Science student noticed that sloppy coding left a treasure trove of identity-theft worthy information unsecured and notified the Director of Information Services and Technology. Where he got into trouble was going back into the system unauthorized a few days later to check if the vulnerability had been fixed. A panel of 15 faculty members voted overwhelmingly to expel him for “unprofessional conduct” and render his grades for the semester zero. [Source: Gizmodo] samaritan
