The Journal News caused a mini uproar after it decided to publish a Google interactive map displaying pistol permits in three New York state counties. Well, the newspaper has now acknowledged some of the data was inaccurate. According to the publication only 3,907 of the 16,998 permits in Rockland county were considered current and the remaining are considered “historical,” because updates have not occurred in the last five years. Because of these “historical” permits, some issued as far back as the 1930s, many owners have passed away, moved, or no longer have the gun. Other inaccuracies were based on people providing incorrect addresses when applying for the permits. The newspaper did not reach out to any owners before publishing the data.
