With a $300 million dollar budget and a goal of releasing at least five original programs per year, Netflix wants to become the new HBO. In an interview with GQ, Netflix’s chief content officer Ted Sarandos believes the video streaming company has what it takes to compete with the likes of HBO. Besides providing a big budget for original series—up to $100 million—it also agrees to full seasons and doesn’t require pilots. “The goal is to become HBO faster than HBO can become us,” Sarandos told GQ.
