For the first time ever, Samsung has beaten Nokia in total volume of shipments, according to estimates for how many phones Samsung shipped this quarter. Samsung previously passed Nokia in sales volume and profitability, but this last crown had been slightly out of reach. As Horace Dediu notes, the primary reason that the two companies have changed positions is that Samsung was forward-looking, while Nokia was not. A lesson for all companies: Tides change quickly.
