Been living under a rock? Don’t know the name Kim Dotcom. Prepare to. The Megaupload who has been the target of multinational piracy investigations has announced plas to build a “free broadband pipe from New Zealand to the United States.” The plan is to resurrect the Pacific Fibre project that went bankrupt in August. While government, businesses, and foreign telecoms would pay, New Zealand ISPs would get free access for overseas downloads. The project requires $400 million in additional funding, which Dotcom plans to contribute through a combination of his own funds and newly raised capital. Given the source of the plan, don’t hold your breath on its completion. [Source ArsTechnica]
