Web 1.0 enemies Sean Parker and Lars Ulrich of Metallica have buried the hatchet. They appeared on stage today at Spotify’s product launch event to announce that Metallica’s entire catalogue would now appear on Spotify. The timing of the deal is tied to the fact that Metallica gained control over all of the rights to its music. Ulrich, one of the figureheads in the litigation that ultimately shut down Parker’s company Napster, says he was naive in those days. After getting to know each other, Parker and Ulrich realized they have a lot in common. Metallica has always been pro-bootlegging, Ulrich says. Spotify CEO Daniel Ek said Spotify is “like tape trading on crack.”
