East Village resident Nigel Warren rented out his apartment through Airbnb only to come home and face potential fines totaling $40,000 and an eviction threat from the landlord. Bad guests? No, just an old-fashioned case of breaking the law. Apparently, Warren had violated laws designed to crack down on illegal transient hotels. Using Airbnb in general is not illegal in New York, however there are very specific guidelines to follow when renting out apartments in absentia. Lucky for Warren, his violations were dismissed due to a paperwork error. [Source: The New York Times]
