According to a report by Florian Mueller, patent abuse not only hurts innovation in the technology world, but it also ends up hurting local economies. The example cited is Germany, which is losing a regional Microsoft center to the Netherlands. Microsoft is citing legal troubles as the only reason the subsidiary is being moved, and this presumably means the current patent lawsuit against Motorola. While Motorola may end up being in the right, it doesn’t excuse the fact that patent lawsuits are hurting employees and are hurting the economy. It’d be easy to bet that this trend will grow over time.
