A scientist in New Zealand has had his request to use the term “Hobbit” (as in the tiny, fur-footed protagonist in JRR Tolkien’s epic of the same name) as part of a presentation denied by JRR Tolkien’s estate. Surprisingly, this isn’t the first time a request like this has been denied, despite the fact that the the hominids in question have been referred to as “hobbits” for years.
