Last week, Toronto Star reporter Rosie DiManno wrote what many observers including Buzzfeed’s Andrew Kaczynski deemed “the worst story intro ever.” (Here’s the column in question). Because of the graphic and, as some have argued, insensitive nature of the lede, the Star’s public editor Kathy English chose to weigh in, coming to DiManno’s defense: “DiManno covers many trials with difficult graphic evidence. While I personally concur with those readers critical of this column’s opening sentence, I think DiManno’s writing overall shows sensitivity and empathy for victims of horrific crimes.” [Source: Toronto Star]
