Well this is good news. Not. Texas Republican representative Lamar Smith, the man who authored the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), has been selected as Chairman of the  House Science, Space, and Technology Committee for the upcoming Congress. More positively, he is also the author of the STEM Jobs Act, which aims to provide visas to foreign students receiving degrees in advanced subjects. Among other things, the committee is responsible for “the application of new technologies to expand our economy and create jobs for American workers.” Considering his checkered past, whether Smith advocate for consumers, entrepreneurs, or protectionist incumbent industries remains to be seen.
