After forcing users to release their address books, mobile messaging service WhatsApp is in violation of Dutch and Canadian privacy laws. The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada and the Dutch Data Protection Authority stated by forcing users to provide phone numbers of people now using the WhatsApp platform, the company is breaching both security and privacy laws. “Both users and non-users should have control over their personal data and users must be able to freely decide what contact details they wish to share with WhatsApp.” said Dutch Data Protection Authority chairman Jacob Kohnstamm.
