Microsoft will not be shipping a free DVD player application with Windows 8, which has some people asking why Microsoft can’t get its act together on a simple application like this, while open source foundations like VLC have been able to release free applications openly. ZDNet has looked into it, and is reporting that the key difference is that VLC is based out of France, and that Microsoft is just too juicy of a target for patent trolls to take on for such a minor part of the operating system.
