From The News Desk

We are less than 60 days from Southland and we have a ton of exciting news to share this week.

We've already announced our partnership with Bonnaroo's producers for Southland's music programming, but today we're announcing another aspect of that partnership: we're joining forces to produce Hackeroo, a very special, and very cool, hackathon at the event.

Hackeroo runs from May 10th at 9 a.m. through Sunday, May 11th in Nashville, TN. The hackathon's focus will be on technology that enhances the experience of live events (like Bonnaroo). To that end, not only will the winners get to attend Bonnaroo as VIP guests, but they'll also be able to debut their technology to the festival's 80,000 attendees.

Here are some of the areas we're hoping to see hacked at Hackeroo:

Communications. How do you solve the problem of finding your friends -- and making new ones -- at an event like Bonnaroo? We're talking location-based messaging, real-time line and crowd reports from the different stages.. all things hyper-local.

Visual Presentation. For example: "Tower Hackers". Create visualization or gaming apps that allow festival goers to interact with the Bonnaroo Clock Tower. API details to interact with the tower to be provided.
Games. Onsite location games or trivia apps.
Community. Pre-festival planning for Bonnaroo and other live events. How do you Roo?
Blow Our Minds. Build something not in these categories that helps us make live events even more amazing!
If spending the weekend hacking on something that could impact the already amazing Bonnaroo experience (and the experience of any other live events) sounds like your kind of gig, sign up right now.

Hackeroo will be held at the offices of email marketing company Emma, who is the presenting sponsor of Hackeroo. Judging will take place Sunday night at 7 p.m. and will include Pando's Sarah Lacy, representatives from AC Entertainment and Superfly and a few surprise judges.

The winner will then spend the next few weeks honing the technology so that it can be distributed successfully at Bonnaroo. The technology will be officially unveiled the last night of Southland on the stage of the Ryman Auditorium before our Southland awards ceremony.

See you there!
